VIMAS – WP3 Novel approaches to recreational monitoring

Project description

This research develops new ways of monitoring and managing outdoor recreation in protected and recreational areas. It focuses on how people experience nature, in this case where they find tranquillity, restoration, or disturbance. Using Public Participation GIS (PPGIS), visitors are invited to map and explain their experiences. These insights are combined with ecological data to better understand how human use and environmental needs overlap, diverge, or come into conflict.

The project brings together different forms of knowledge e.g. visitor experiences, ecological indicators, and management perspectives at different scale. The aim is to help managers respond to change, balance competing needs, and design strategies that work for people as a part of nature. Overall, this work contributes practical tools and new knowledge for more inclusive, value-sensitive, and sustainable management of recreational landscapes.
